Myo-Inositol for PCOS

If you're grappling with a recent PCOS diagnosis and have been scouring the internet for potential remedies, chances are you've stumbled upon other "cysters" advocating for myoinositol.

Myoinositol has been a staple in the realm of PCOS alternative medicine for many years, yet it remains unfamiliar to some. In my naturopathic practice, myoinositol is highly regarded for its efficacy in treating PCOS-related insulin resistance, cycle irregularities, and sub-fertility. This is because, when taken at the appropriate dosage, it can influence thyroid stimulating hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and insulin sensitivity.

Given that approximately 70% of women with PCOS struggle with insulin resistance, myoinositol becomes a valuable addition to the therapeutic toolkit. Both in clinical settings and through studies, it's been observed that improving insulin resistance and then the follow on effects of improving menstrual cycles, fertility, and metabolic markers. This not only alleviates PCOS symptoms but also controls long-term risks like Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), Metabolic Syndrome, and related conditions.

What do clinical studies reveal after six months of myoinositol usage? At a dosage of 2g twice per day, myoinositol has demonstrated the potential to:

  • Decrease serum testosterone levels

  • Increase Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG)

  • Decrease fasting insulin levels

  • Reduce HOMA-IR levels

  • Improve acne

  • Enhance the action of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) via anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH)

  • Enhance oocyte and embryo quality

While obtaining therapeutic doses of inositols from food can be challenging, they can be found in fruits, beans, corn, and nuts.
